Jazz Guitar Elements

The tested and true self-study course for jazz guitarists of all levels. (eBook)

"It’s a great book; it covers all the basics for jazz guitar. I love being able to start anywhere and still grasp the materials. Great chord voicings; specially like the Bb blues."

"I'm a guitar teacher and I've studied privately with Michael Berard in 1990 at Concordia University. I bought his eBook ''Jazz guitar Elements'' for a curiosity, for myself and to get teaching ideas for my students. [The Author] has been a source of knowledge and of inspiration since I first started studying Jazz guitar some 26 years ago. Most of the book is very useful and is a comprehensive Jazz guitar method I would definitely recommend it to other guitar teachers and to my students as well. Thank you."

Jazz Guitar Elements - Exploring Chords, Scales and Arpeggios - by jazz guitarist, composer, arranger and educator Michael Berard is a wonderful self-study manual that covers all the basics for jazz guitar.

My personal "Jazz Guitar Elements story" started when I was about 19. I had so many questions about all this "jazz" stuff... and I especially wanted to know where to put my fingers to make sounds like the guys on the recordings. That's about when I encountered Mike Berard's sparkles of jazz guitar knowledge. When I found this book online, I studied its content diligently during the summer, and then I moved to Montreal and started private lessons with the author in September.

Long story short, this is where I learned most (if not all) of my personal "foundations" in jazz guitar ... from Michael Berard and his Jazz Guitar Elements book!

When I'm talking about the laying "my foundations" on the instrument, I really do mean the bulk of my playing. I remember being first introduced to specific guitar topics from this very book: drop 2 voicings, voiceleading, jazz chord progressions, arpeggios, extensions, modes, applying scales to progressions, etc.

I also discoverd the basics of real jazz harmony: modal interchange, secondary dominants, chord functions, "rules" for chord extensions, etc.

Now, looking back on this learning experience, I understand why some students ask me pretty much the same questions I was asking myself only a few years back... with Jazz Guitar Elements I can point out to the exact source where I got all of this stuff in the first place. :-)

So What's In There?

Even though it may sound like it's a big encyclopedia, Jazz Guitar Elements is only about 200 pages. It contains a lot, it's well organized and, most of all, easily digestable if you're wiling to put in the practice.

The author really designed it as a self-study course, so you have to "connect the dots" yourself on several pages. For instance you'll write out voicings, progressions, extensions or a chord-melody in pencil. This was perfect for me, as I'm definitely more of the self-taught kind. :-)

Jazz Guitar Elements is designed so that once you tackle a topic and "get it", well, you "get it" for life. Period.

Some keys points here:

  • Neatly organized in four big sections: chords, scales, arpeggios and the brand new "Putting it All Together" chapter. You always know what you're practicing and why.
  • Each section covers various approaches and has numerous examples for study AND practice on your instrument.
  • Since it's not a method, you can start anywhere and still grasp the materials. Go at your own pace.
  • Contains numerous example of actual jazz repertoire (standards). You learn jazz by playing jazz. Not in a vacuum.
  • Has been tested on hundreds (if not thousands) of students.
  • Jazz Guitar Elements has been scrutinized on the pedagogical level for maximum efficiency. The material went through tedious (university level) research before ending up in this final format!

"Excellent explanation of jazz music theory along with challenging exercises and worksheets. I've been teaching guitar for over twenty years and have had a great system to help students memorize triads and seventh chords in all 5 positions. Now I can include extensions and alterations.

I have several jazz guitar books in my library but "Jazz Guitar Elements" is the first to be interactive and helped to raise not only my understanding of jazz theory, but my actual playing of jazz on the guitar. The explanation of Drop 2 voicings alone, is worth the price of "admission".

Many thanks to Michael for putting this ebook together, and many thanks to Marc for including it in his lesson plans."

"I think the Jazz guitar elements book is fantastic! I haven't found anything to complain about. A hard copy would be nice, but apart from that I found it well written, in a beautifully simple, clear and accessible format. It covers a great range of important topics, and to great depth. I'm a satisfied customer!" -Alexander S.
